Commonly known as Weaver Ant or Black Thorny, Polyrhachis
vicina Roger is found only in China and certain parts of Asia. Known in traditional
Chinese medicine as xuan ju (black young horse), it is regarded by research
scientists as the "Treasure Chest of Nutrients of the Animal Kingdom". It is the
only ant species approved by the National Food Hygiene, Drug Control Department of China
for use as food and medicine. Among all the different species of ants, Polyrhachis
vicina Roger is the only one found to contain the widest spectrum of amino acids and
