Chlorella
is a single-celled fresh water algae with a history dating back more
than two billion years. The wonderful thing about Chlorella is its
amazing inherent strength through a genetic structure that has
remained unchanged for all that length of time. This genetic Structure
is responsible for Chlorella's high nutritive value, ease of
cultivation and astonishing rate of growth.

Roughly
the size of a human red blood cell, this tiny microalgae was
discovered in 1890 by a Dutch microbiologist, Martinus Beijernick, who
studied pond algae. His fascination with the question of why
sweet-water ponds turned a deep green led to the discovery of
Chlorella, which is rich in green-pigmented chlorophyll. He had no way
of knowing that his minute discovery would be considered green gold a
century later.
Chlorella
is the most researched algae in the world. It has been studied by the
Rockfeller Foundation, Camegie Institute and NASA. Japan pioneered in
developing the technology to grow, harvest and process Chlorella on a
large commercially-feasible scale. The Japanese have been using
Chlorella for years as one of their principal health food and for its
anti-aging benefits.

Chlorella
is a storehouse of concentrated nutrients. It is more than a
collection of vitamins and minerals; being a whole plant it contains
all the complex chemical compounds necessary to the protoplasm of
life. One of its most remarkable nutritional qualities is its high
protein content: 50-60 percent with all the essential amino acids
including a high content of lysine for optimum health.
As an
all-vegetable source, Chlorella also provides impressive amounts of
betacarotene, vitamins C, E, K and the full range of B-vitamins. It
has more vitamin B12 than beef liver and is an excellent source of
this "feel-good" vitamin. The minerals in Chlorella include
calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and trace amounts of
manganese, iodine and zinc.

One
particular characteristic of Chlorella is its high
concentration of chlorophyll, often as high as 7% of its total
weight. This has led some to call Chlorella the "Supreme
Whole Food Concentrate". Chlorella is by far the richest
source of chlorophyll available for human nutrition today.

Benefits of Chlorophyll |
 |
|
Called
"Nature's Healer" for its positive effects on
health, chlorophyll's chemical Structure is similar to
haemoglobin, the pigment found in red blood cells. Chlorophyll
has proven useful as a blood builder which improves red blood
cell count and corrects anaemia.
Known
as the most powerful cleansing agent found in nature,
chlorophyll detoxifies the bowels, liver, kidney and
bloodstream. It normalizes the beneficial bowel flora,
stimulates tissue regeneration and speeds the healing of
wounds and burns. It also assists in digestion, controls
calcium in the body and increases iron absorption. It is best
known for its deodorant properties.

In
the early 1950s, Dr Fujimaki or the People's Scientific
Research Centre in Tokyo separated a substance from a hot
water extract of Chlorella by electrophoresis. He named the
hitherto unknown fraction of Chlorella, the Chlorella Growth
Factor (CGF) which was found to be rich in the nucleic acids
RNA and DNA. Chlorella is one of the best known natural foods
abundant in nucleic acids. Canned sardines were thought to be
the highest source of RNA; however, recent research findings
indicate that Chlorella is 17 times higher in RNA than
sardines.
Production
of RNA and DNA (termed as "long life factors") by
the cells in our body slows down with age, resulting in lower
levels of vitality, physical deterioration and susceptibility
to diseases. Lifestyle factors, junk foods, drugs, smoking,
alcohol and pollution also cause sluggish production of RNA
and DNA.
