Excerpts of clinical
studies conducted from 1994 to 2001
Efficacy of Saw
Palmetto for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) conducted
in the U.S.A.
A multicenter open study evaluated 305
men who met the selection criteria using the International Prostate
Symptom Score (IPSS). They were given 160 mg standardized extract of
Saw Palmetto twice daily for three months. Saw Palmetto extract
appeared to be effective, well-tolerated and compared favorably with
conventional medical therapies used in BPH patients.

Efficacy of Saw
Palmetto (Permixon*) for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)
conducted in the U.S.A.
A six-month comparitive trial involving
about 1000 men with BPH, demonstrated that Saw Palmetto was
well-tolerated and had similar efficacy to Finasteride (Proscar™),
the only drug approved for treatment of BPH. Some were given two
Permixon tablets twice daily and others, Finasteride 5mg once daily.
This clearly showed that Saw Palmetto is as effective as its drug
counterpart.
*Permixon is a registered drug produced
by PF Medicaments, France. It contains 80 mg standardized Saw Palmetto
extract. The usual dose is two tablets twice daily.

Efficacy of Pygeum
africanum extract for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)
conducted in Europe
A study was conducted at urology
clinics in the Czech and Slovak Republics and in Poland to confirm the
efficacy of Pygeum africanum. The subjects were men aged 50 to 75
years who met the selection criteria using the International Prostate
Symptom Score (IPSS). They were put on 50mg Pygeum africanum extract
twice daily for two months. After the treatment period, nighttime
urination was reduced, the urinary flow and urine volume were
significantly improved and no treatment-related adverse effects were
observed.

Efficacy of Pygeum
africanum extract for treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)
conducted in the U.S.A.
18 randomized, controlled trials
involving 1,562 men were analyzed. The treatment duration was 30 days.
The results suggested that pygeum africanum had modest but significant
effects on overall symptoms. Nighttime urination was reduced, urine
volume and flow was increased.
