Understanding The Dangers of UVA
& UVB
UV rays are most damaging to skin. Apart from
causing your skin to darken, they also cause collagen to break down at
a faster rate than with regular chronological ageing. Exposure to UV
rays accounts for 90% of the symptoms of premature skin ageing - age
spots, freckles, wrinkles, sagging, and dry, leathery complexion. UV
rays are also responsible for more than 90% of all skin cancers,
afflicting tens of thousands annually.
While many believe that only beach-goers or those
who stay out for long hours under the sun are at risk, no one is
spared. Even short exposure can harm unprotected skin. Your skin is
exposed to UVA and UVB daily at home and at work. UVA rays can
actually pass through windows in your home and cars. Using an umbrella
or a wide-brimmed hat does not provide protection either as both UV
rays can reflect off the ground, exposing you to UV radiation. Even on
hazy, cloudy days, UV danger still exists because the rays are still
getting through. Being indoors isn't safe either as fluorescent light
bulbs emit both UVA and UVB rays!
So, how do you protect yourself? There is no need to
hide in the house with the shades drawn….. Just apply a good sun
block.
UV Rays & DNA Damage & Skin
Cancer
Both UVA and UVB have a negative impact on skin
cell's DNA. UVB radiation harms the DNA directly, while UVA indirectly
causes DNA damage by increasing free radicals in the skin, and free
radicals are synonymous with accelerated skin ageing! DNA is a cell's
'brain', and once it is damaged, the cell loses its ability to
function properly. Damaged cells replicate abnormally and can
potentially harm other cells. In the long run, UV radiation
accelerates skin ageing and increases your risk of getting skin
cancer.
Protecting Little Ones From UV
Rays
Kids are in a dynamic state of growth, and are
therefore more susceptible to the threats of UV rays than adults. As a
parent, you'd know that kids love to spend their days outdoors and
this means hours under the blazing hot sun. Their delicate skin is
exposed to harmful UV rays whenever they participate in sports,
Physical Education (PE) classes or extra co-curricular activities in
school, or wait for their transportation after school, etc. There is
no stopping them but you can definitely protect them with a good sun
block.
A typical example of what damage UV rays can have on
your skin. Note the clear difference between the exposed area and the
covered area.
